This happened a little more than three years ago...

.......wow, It seems so much longer in some ways.
I never headed east ether. England is still there I think. :)

The End

The End

I was just sitting here tonight thinking about how fast things are happening. And how I need to push the envelope and create a new income.....not only new, but fast. I took a look around me at the task at hand and for a brief moment I just wanted to cry. I actually felt the tears welling up inside. It would have been the easy thing to do to just succumb to the feelings. Thats what I wanted. But I also know that that doesnt spin the wheels of life. While it may have felt good for an instant that I could just let go and say "fuck!" and cry myself into a drunk state, because of the immensity of what has became my life and my challenge, I choose not to go there. This boat and all that it encompasses will not defeat me.

So.....I grabbed myself by the soul and picked me up. Because above all I want Anole to take me where my dreams have only brushed the surface. I want this boat to take me to the ends of the earth literally. Knowing that it is just such a huge fucking task ahead of me. I know I have the right vessel to get me there. I know I have the desire to push me to the limits of my abilities. And that frightens me.

A man of very limited experiences is soon going to challenge his self. Not the sea, as you might read about in all those stupid books. You dont challenge the sea. It challenges you. And you challenge yourself.

The first time I hoist the sails on this boat I will be in an easterly direction. All signs of life as I know it, Tybee Island, Wassaw sound and the entire eastern seaboard will pass away across the stern. I will be only the third time that land has passed out of sight in the horizon. Only this time I will be at the helm. That is what I yearn for more that anything at this moment.....seeing land pass behind the stern of the Anole, sails high and proud. The lizard climbing the mast. The Genoa catching the breeze and heeling to the windows. England dead ahead.

So, I pick myself up from the downers and tell myself that the only way that is going to happen is if I make that happen.

"Cool Change" slipped into oblivion today. She, in all her faithful glory passed on to the new owner. His name is Samuel Andrew Smith. Yeah, I know. I hate those people with the name of Smith. You never know who they really are. Just some dude passing by? Wanted by the law maybe? Just a hobo trying to lay low? You just never know about them "Smith's". :)

But this guy I have to apologize to. I'm sorry Sam. I should not have doubted you. You screamed "sailor" the moment I meet you. I hope you dont hold it against me. Really. I look back at the time with you and Karen on "Cool Change" and I know you guys were on the up and up. Sorry.

Let me "splain". Sam, as it turned out was one of the first guys to call about Cool Change when I put her up for sale. The only one that really showed a real interest. Me, the untrusting person that I am, doubted him from the beginning. I doubt everyone from the beginning. That is a trait that I know is not good but it is a trait that I will not for go for another. The world dictates that trait as norm these days. Sad but true. And when you combine the world events with my life experiences there is a steel wall that one has to pass to get to me these days. Once in a while I meet a person that melts its like butter. But it is so rare that I dont think about it.

So, Sam comes along. Buys the boat. Like forever ago actually. But I just didnt say anything about it. Why? Why you ask? Because I fucked up. I got Sam squared away with the boat. There were issues with the whole deal......trailer issues, tire issues, tide issues, daylight issues. Hell you name the issue that could have happened the weekend of the sale and it happened. Ask Sam. :)

But the big issue for me happened the next morning after the sale. The boat was gone.

I woke up and made my way into the new day. I had to go pay my "banker", "Captain Marvel", for the loan that got me my new boat. All kinds of crap was on my plate that day. I had already made my mind up of my new business. My new income. Those moneys, while small to some, were huge to me. Every penny was designated to an end result.

So I did my morning thing.....(we wont go there).....and motivated. First thing in every photographers routine is CAMERA. I had my belt waiting for my G9...........where is my G9? Panic. WHOLLY FUCK!!!!!! My G9 is on the boat.

Start drama.

I still had Sams number on my phone? Didnt I? Holly shit!!!!!

Found! Call Sam............Sam Had a flat tire on the way to Atlanta with the boat. Drama for Sam all night. And believe me I feel for Sam. Cause I did all that.....Been There!

Sam......walking to the boat....says "yeah, its here, I got it".

wheeeeew wheeeeeeew I breath a sigh of relief only to realize that my camera is 300 miles away.

I will not go into the drama that passed between us about that camera in the days after that.

Let me just say this. A person would be better off backing his truck up to my boat and driving away with it than he would be taking my camera. That is my life line. That little camera has and is such a big part of my life that I looked beyond all that was right in front of my eyes as far as character traits and assumed the very worst of people.

Today, Samuel Andrew Smith's package that was sent in the mail arrived in my hands.

My G9 is home. What a burden off my mind.

Their are good people out there. I tell myself all the time to trust my first instincts. And usually I do. And I should have this time. I assumed the worse.

I had this boss on a job one time. We were building the Maximum security prison here in Georgia. The "death row" unit. Our job was the controls to the doors and just all the controls period. It wasnt my line of work. I am a commercial electrician. But times were hard so I took the job. We were pulling the wires into a wing of the building and I was kinda lost about the wire pull. So I made up the pull as I "assumed" it should be. I remember to this day what he told me about "assuming" something on that job. He said "never assume anything." And he ask me why should I not assume anything? I thought of all the stupid answers. They were wrong. Finally he told me why......."think of how assume is spelled. If you assume something your only going to make an "ASS out of U and ME."

I have not and will never forget that.

Once again, Sorry Karen and Sam. And thank you for returning my camera. If ever I can be of any help or assistance to you in your adventures with Cool Change please dont hesitate to ask.

Your friend (I hope), Butch

Cheers be wit ya !!!!

The Daily Grind or Simply Messing About In Boats :)

Simply Messing About In Boats .........I think this is my destiny. What a great place to end up. :)
Life is not rushed on the boat unless you make it so. Not happening here.

This boat is being reborn. It fell into a state of unkempt a long way back. The potential is great for a very nice coastal cruiser. I am doing my part to help.
More to come. :)

Dinghys and Dicks - Don't Leave Home Without Them. :)

I can remember vaguely the old joke about the wife that would let the husband leave home to date but he couldn't take his dick with him? Hugh? I didn't get it then and I don't get it now.
Beryl prompted me to leave the wood without my dinghy. Not that I fucking needed it or anything like that. But it should have been with me.
The wood was on the wood. LOL :)
The morrow of this story is:
Out Without Dinghy
is like
Out Without Dick
So Not Right. :(

-Butch Petty - S/V Anole

So I have been wanting the full uncut version of Apocalypse Now on my hard drive. :)
I just love that movie. I have officially elevated it to my altime number one movie.
Favorite scene is the Bunnys :)

Now I have it on board for full uncut viewing.

Dinghy and Dick, Don't Leave Home Without Them

One of the most stupidest things I ever saw in my life........and thats saying a lot of stupid.
Dinghy and Dick, Don't Leave Home Without Them

I just got one thing to say to Beryl: You best take your ass on outa here! I got something for you bitch! Don't come back!
Ok a couple of things.

Something is real fucking broken in our world. Have you seen it? It is 50 Percent. Have you seen it? Our government wants to make it 90 percent.
That 50 percent is the people not paying taxes. If our govenment gets to where it wants to be 90 percent will not be paying taxes. Then all elections will just be superficial. All the LOOSERS that are not paying taxes will be in control.

The Big Question is :Were do you want to be in four more years?
Change Is Not Enough!!!!
It's Broken In Washington.
Dinghy and Dick, Don't Leave Home Without Them

If I had a little spare money I would buy me some boat toys. Even better yet, do my first haul out. But I can always wish.
These toys are bound for a yet un-named boat. More skinny tomorrow. :)
Dinghy and Dick, Don't Leave Home Without Them

One of the most stupid things that I have done lately was crash in the middle of a good eposode of CSI. Really. As I swang around and around on the hook waiting for Beryl to get over his problem I nodded out. It was so flipping nice. I was gone to other oceans. Groovy. :)
Then I woke. Holy fuck it's raining................no, it's storming. Shit! Close hatches !!!! Close Port Lights !!!!
Crap ! My camera is soaked.....
..................
....I had only one heat souce. I popped the batteries. On the heat!!!!!
This is the very first time that I have been so very happy that my propane fridge generates heat. :)

Storm Tactics or Wishing I Wasn't Here

Got started today on my galley floor today. Got tired of worrying about this damn Beryl storm thing. Then it started kicking up again. I should have pulled off the dock this morning when it was calm. Notice to storm: Don't give me another chance.......I'll be gone.
Over this already.

Cheers folks !!!

Seabiscuit Is Born and Anole's New Paint

The Dinghy finally gets its new name. This was a perfect fit for the dinghy when I first thought of it. "Seabisquit", as most know, was a true champion. The size and shape lent itself to the name and even going deeper.......the sire of "Seabiscuit" was a horse named "Hard Tack". Hardtack is a simple type of cracker or biscuit, made from flour, water, and salt. Cheap and long-lasting, it was used during long sea voyages and military campaigns as a primary foodstuff which was usually dunked in water, brine, coffee, or some other liquid or cooked into a skillet meal. This cracker was little more than flour and water which had been baked hard and would keep for months as long as it was kept dry. The name derives from the British seamen's slang for food, "tack", and the fact it is so hard and dry.

So yes, I think the name will fit great.

As I post this Tropical Storm Beryl is leaving it's mark on the area. The last 24 hours has been hell but I think the worst is past. Fortunately for me I finally finished seven days striat redoing all the wood on the boat and gave the deck a much needed new paint job. I finished on Saturday and the storm rolled in on Sunday. Perfect timing. :)

Case #1: "Bobby Brown" / The Little Tybee Island Raccoon Relocation Program

I am not sure if this is the Raccoon that dared inter my boat while I was aboard and I don't care. It was relocated.
The trap has been re-activated. In the event that another victim falls prey.........Well let me just say this: I will relocate the whole frigging family if so deemed.
Just saying. The day a piece of vermin animal comes on board my boat and does not ask for the food before it takes it.........he's done.
Bring on the second wave !!!! I ain't playing. The EBH could use some new blood in the gene pool.
Just saying, :)

So there was the "fat chick', looking sexier than ever, and what does she do? She hops on another boat?!?!?!

See yawll on Sunday at Beach Hammock for the sailboat roundup. :)

CAN I GET A HELL YEAH ?!?!?!!!! No more sanding the wood on the Anole. She is sweetly sealed in teak oil. I'm just digging the hell out of that already. :)

The Raw and The Oiled

Did I mention that I will never have to sand the wood on my deck again???? Just saying. :)

The Raw and The Oiled - 2

PS .More photos after the final coats of teak oil. I want to get three coats on this week. It was all fresh and virgin wood. Meaning this is the first week this wood has been exposed to air and atmosphere since 1968.
So I want a good seal on it all. :)

Cheers now, ya hear?

By now I am sure that you got the message that tomorrow is a sailing day? LOL :)

An Old Tooth, Some Old Wood, and a Biscuit

This was a nice discovery. I thought the cowling was part of the structure when in fact is all just trim. Very sweet. It makes the repairs much easier.

Changes

The dingy, "Sea Biscuit", is undergoing some changes too. It is being transformed into the working dinghy that it was always meant to be. {these were yesterdays photos - more coming}

Ok, here we go again. I let that "other" Captain talk me into this. I think it will be a good thing for the Captain. The boat may suffer but so be it. I will not ever sand the wood on my boat again! Period!
Over that, been there, fucking over it !!!
This wood has been taken down to its original bare wood from 1968. It's teak and it is so fucking pretty to look at. I hope this comes out good. Just saying.

For three months you have been dictating what I could eat. Then this morning when I had finally had enough, so had you. It's been a long road and I will miss you for sure. Hell, we have plowed through some whiskey. But I will keep you around. Maybe I will offer you as a bonus in my 3 million dollar raffle. :) LOL

The Little Tybee Island Raccoon Protection Program

I have to admit that this morning when I woke to the carnage on board the boat I was ready for justice. I was the judge the jury and the executioner all in one and the trial took place in three seconds. Done! The executioner readied his weapons.
As the day wore on and I summoned comments from the past I had to "evolve". I evolved in my convictions and reduced the previously imposed sentence.
Officially today the LTIRPP was enacted. This is the day that the "Little Tybee Island Raccoon Protection Program" was passed by congress. "La Trip" would be the new acronym for the program. It's sole purpose is to not drown till their death renegade raccoons.
Donations are gladly accepted, just leave your credit card info in the comment box. Trust me. LOL :)

I would like to acknowledge contributing members of the LTIRPP.
First Officer: Captain Steve Marlay
Second Officer: Scott Daulbert
Everyones First Mate: Stephanie Daulbert

Warning, Some Raccoons May be injured in this venture.

Just Saying !!!! LOL :)

The Raccoons Ticket to Paradise

Ok, I have been easing into this project because the prospects of the whole deal are daunting. We, yes you and I, are about to embark on a maintenance program on the Anole. I am glad to have you along for the fun.
First off is the replacement of this rotten wood. New paint and new varnish follow. So Sit back and enjoy the insanity of the whole ordeal. :)

First Order Of Business

My dinghy which also serves as all around fishing vessel for food supplies for the Anole is about to undergo changes. This is going to be the new working platform for the front of the dinghy. It will host an anchor roller, an anchor keeper and who knows what else. Have a little faith here. It's going to work. lol :)
Also, while we are on the whole dinghy subject, let me just say this, and it may be a break out moment. The new name of the dinghy is going to be "Sea Biscuit" .

Just Trust Me< Or Maybe Not LOL :)

Amanda Marshall, I can't invite you to my prom or any kind of crap like that, but I do have a boat. Your body would look really cool on it too. I'm sailing this weekend. Just saying....
......Ok moving on.

So I had this wild ass idea of growing a full beard, something I had never done in my life. I wanted to do some of those "fu man chu" braids in my beard. Fuck That !!!! It is way too damn hot around here for that.
I think what I will do here is take that two inches of beard material that I cut off today and offer it up in a public auction. As you can see there are many and various colors of hair. Also remember the DNA value. Just think about it for a minute. Here you have the smartest man on the planet. How else would you describe the owner of this boat. Miraculous !!!!
Let's just say that I start the bidding off at three million. That is fair I would think. In order to bid just put your name and credit card info into the comment box and submit. Hey !!!! Trust me. :)

Start The Bidding !!!

Got some floor problems. I don't want to delve into it real deep at this moment. Lets just say........the maintenance guy is on the job.....and working.

The Board ! The Board ! Boss, The Board !!!

What a Pretty Board

Each time I head out to sail for what could become days I have a "Charging Party". It is a real blast. It usually takes about 24 hours to gather all my little rechargeable batteries from all there little hiding places. It can be real fun at times trying to track all the little bastards down. :)

It's A Charging Party. :)

Sometimes you just have to take hold of the reins of the beast and make it slow down. But the Anole, she demands so much of my attention. I can never please her.

Bully Soup or Flea Bags or Its all a wash.........

So there he was, the kid on the yard that got bullied every time he went out to play. All the other chickens would chase it around the yard. They pulled all the tail feathers off the kid. Long came the Nielsens. They adopted the kid. Now he has a low volume crow on a low keyed plantation with lots of hens to rein over.
The wicked flip side to the story is “the kid” is replacing a bully chicken that attacked and hurt all the hens on the yard.
He became chicken soup as his last gift to the playground.

Cock Of The Walk

So there I was, sitting on the porch, enjoying a nice cold beer. I had been putting in 12-14 hour days on the Nielsen Plantation. I was beat. About that time “Rambling Man” (aka David Nielsen) decided it was time for his 2-3 mile run. My side kick “Joey” was all about that till the second lap started.
He decided he would hang out with me then. He is just an old flea bag, literally. But he is cool.
Joey

So there we were after the hella cool bike ride thru the country and leave it to David(aka “rambling man”) to pick our lunch stop. He he he. Very Christian place and very well decorated. LOL

The Road Less Traveled

Hey yawl,
I regret that I cannot make it to the ATL for the big birthday bash for Jay. However I do wish to send my regards to Jay. Happy seven bullseyes.
As you are all aware I have resided in Savannah for going on twelve years now. I love it down here. Things seem to be in sync for me here. Things move a little slower here than they do in Atlanta. And I love it.
If you guys are not aware of the fact that I have been unemployed for the past three years now…..well now you do. I manage to scrape together a living……you know, food , shelter, and a couple of bills each month. But I have to work my ass off to do it. Yeah, I sail my boat, the wind is free. And I drink my whiskey to keep my sanity. Life sucks. But somehow I have avoided the onslaught of gray hair with the balanced thoughts of how lucky I am to be alive.
As all of you know, travel is really hard. Because in these twelve years I have only seen Mama here once for 15 minutes as she passed thru and Dad(?) for five minutes as he passed thru. All the rest of you have never seen me in Savannah the past ten years. You may have been here, but you didn’t see me.
Twelve Years. It is tough to travel isn’t it?
The first five years I was here I traveled to Atl. For all the special times, or most of them. Then as the years passed I just got so damned tired of that one way highway. I don’t do it anymore.
Hope life is well with all of you.
Happy Trails to All
Butch

The S/V Camelot Gets New Deck Paint

This project turned into a real pain in the ass. For the little bit of area that I had to paint that is. It took me two weeks to get this deck painted. The problems were so many and varied that I will not even go there. We actually re-grouped and bought a new turbine HVLP paint sprayer made by “Fuji Spray” out of Canada. That really is the key to working with Awl Grip paint. You need to spray it to make it look good.
This project is still not done. The rest of the boat is to get painted but going to take a little bit of break for now.
