Night Riders or A Great Day Sailing

Got to actually go sailing on the S/V Joy instead of just looking at her all the time. I helped Capt. Carol Pine bring her boat home on Monday.
We had the motor running at 5:00 am and were creeping through waters mostly unknown to either one of us. I had heard horror stories of Delegal Creek Marina for a long time. If you read what "The Landings Association." says on their website it slaps you right in the face why it is not a sailboat friendly marina. Read it HERE It is shallow as hell and very dangerous for anyone that doesn't have intimate knowledge of the area. Warning!!

The only thing that saved Carol and I were the GPS "tracks" that we followed out in the pitch black darkness. And then there is the cut that you have to make to get into Green Island Sound that, even at high tide, is very shallow. We avoided bumping bottom only by inches. I don't have to tell you how happy we were to be clear of that place.

After that the Gods smiled on us all day long. We had a nice tide push us around the ICW to the Wilmington River and a great shove out to the Sound and across. The S/V Joy is a dream to sail. A very smooth and forgiving vessel that can go anywhere in the world. It was my first sail on a Cutter rigged boat. It is very different but she handled great. Even after we crossed over the sound and were against the tide the winds were just right to push us all the way home with great speed.

Eight hours was needed for the full trip home and not one time did we have to tack. A very rare and pleasant sail. Thanks Carol for the great sailing day.
